The Health Promotion Team at Ballarat Community Health Centre conducts programs to raise awareness and provide information on healthy lifestyle choices to the community.

Live a healthy and balanced lifestyle!
Be active
Keeping fit and active has many health benefits. It prevents heart disease and stroke, and strengthens muscles and bones. It can also assist with management of asthma, arthritis and diabetes.
At least thirty minutes of moderate exercise is recommended for good health most days of the week (like brisk walking, cycling, mowing the lawn or swimming).
Eat a healthy diet

Enjoy a a wide variety of nutrious foods

Try to eat plenty of fruit and vegetables

Choose wholegrain breads and cereal products

Eat low fat foods

Drink plenty of water

Develop positive friendships and relationships
A healthy relationship is based on respect. It's when:

You have fun together

You both feel like you can be yourself

You can have different opinions and interests

You listen and trust each other

Maintain a sense of mental wellbeing
Participate in your community
Consume alcohol responsibly
Drinking alcohol increases the risk of cancers and other diseases.
If you choose to drink, limit your intake:

For men, the recommended limit is no more than four standard drinks a day.

For women, it’s two standard drink per day.
-
Alternate alcoholic drinks with non-alcoholic ones like mineral or soda water.

Avoid binge drinking.
Live smoke free
Smoking causes cancer in the lungs, larynx, pancreas, kidneys, vulva, bladder, penis, and stomach. Smoking can cause breathing and circulation problems. Smoking is expensive!!
If you are a smoker:
-
Make a smoke free environment in your home and car for others especially children.
- Phone us for tips on how to quit.
Be sunsmart
Skin can burn in as little as fifteen minutes in the sun.
- Cover up with a protective clothing and hats and sunglasses
- Wear sunglasses
- Use SPF 30+ sunscreen
- Use shade when you can, especially when UV radiation is high – between 10am and 3pm
